Review: Going the Distance

An earthy rom-com that’s not for chicks only

By Shelli Sonstein - Clear Channel

This is a rom-com for the recession era starring two real-life off-and-on loves: Drew Barrymore and Justin Long in hurting professions – the record and newspaper biz. The chemistry is a given. While the romance is sweet, it has a real-life feel thanks to the dialogue, which is laden with curses. You never saw an earthier Drew Barrymore.

The film has what most chick flicks lack: a bromance to keep the guys interested. The scenes between Justin Long and his roommate and job-mate are some of the funniest in the movie. Ditto anytime Christina Applegate is on screen as Barrymore’s oldest, married mom of a sister. She’s a scene stealer!!

What didn’t ring true, to me at least - who is in the depths of a long distancer - how can these two lovers (who see each other maybe every 3 months) not have a single airport reunion??? In long distance love- there’s no place more romantic or heartbreaking than the airport.
